The second largest island of the Western Isles is South Uist. North to south it measures 22 miles and from east to west its 7 miles across. The northwest part of the island is believed to consist of the most ancient rocks in Britain. Here you will find the ruins of old castles, most notably Ormacleit Castle (possibly the briefest standing castle in history!).
